What's in my Guitar Bag?

Posted by Andrew Rivers at

This post describes the gear that I use for practising and for live performance.

Ages ago, I remember seeing a YouTube video with someone describing the contents of their gig bag.  I made a note that I should go through what's in my guitar bag, case etc so I could compare notes.  I have excluded guitars / amps as they go without saying, but I'll talk more about them in a later post.

Apart from the obvious, much of the gear I carry round comes from specific problems that have happened and I've always made a note to keep enough bits and pieces around to make sure we can fix our rigs up.  It's also useful to point out that my son and I act as the techies for the band, so we need stuff to fix up everyone else's gear as well.

My kit is actually broken down into gigging gear and practice gear, as I need a lot less stuff for practice.

Practice Gear

Behringer P600 Pedal Board with 6 pedals:

  • Polytune
  • Jim Dunlop CryBaby
  • Boss Super Overdrive
  • Boss Distortion
  • Boss Phaser
  • Boss Digital Delay

Guitar hard case including the following items:

  • Fretboard cleaner
  • Truss rod allen key
  • Floyd Rose Trem allen keys
  • Random assortment of picks
  • Fretfunk Guitar Dusting Mop

Small rucksack containing the following items:

  • Shubb capo
  • Spare capo
  • Random assortment of picks
  • Wire cutters (for strings)
  • String winder
  • Jack lead x 3 (bagged separately in Fretfunk Guitar Cable Bags)
  • XLR lead x 2 (bagged separately)
  • Shure SM58 in carry case
  • Professional earplugs (ACS)
  • Philips screwdriver
  • More allen keys
  • LED torch
  • Fretfunk Guitar Strap Pick Holder - deluxe edition
  • Spare 9v battery
  • Guitar slide
  • Small point marker pen

Other practice gear

  • Microphone stand
  • iPad Holder for Microphone Stand

Gigging Gear

I keep most of my gigging gear in a large plastic crate so that I can store it and move it all together.  This is my personal gear, not band gear, so I have excluded lighting and PA equipment from this.  This is in addition to the practice gear.

The box typically contains the following:

  • Shure SM57 (in soft case)
  • Shure PG57 (in soft case)
  • 2 x Mini microphone stand for micing amps
  • Shaky egg
  • Tambourine
  • 2 x 3.5 mm stereo jack to 2 x 1.4" mono jack lead (bagged) (for playing MP3s through PA)
  • 2 x spare power cable for monitor / amp (bagged)
  • 12 x XLR cable (bagged separately)
  • Foot switch for amp
  • 10 x mono jack lead (bagged separately)
  • XML to jack converters (male and female)
  • Various effect pedal patch cables
  • Sets of strings for electric and acoustic guitar
  • 1/4" stereo to 3.5 mm stereo jack converter (for headphones)
  • More 9v batteries
  • 6 x roll electrical tape
  • 1 x roll gaffer tape
  • 1 large ball bearing (don't ask, no idea)
  • 3 x short 1/4" stereo to twin 1/4" mono cables (for mixer bypass, no longer used)
  • Assortment of Fretfunk velcro cable ties
  • 3 x 4-way power lead
  • 1 single plug power extension
  • Miniature screwdrivers
  • 13 amp fuses

Other gigging gear:

  • 2 x Microphone stands
  • Vocal effect unit
  • 2 x long power extension cable
  • Floor monitor
  • Small folding guitar stand
  • Guitar stand for 1 guitar
  • Fretfunk Microphone Stand V12 Pick Holder

Going through the list it's amazing just how much equipment I have to carry round.  It looks much worse when listed here, as must of it packs down into quite a small size, and the collection has been accumulated over quite a period of time.

If you've got any thoughts on this post, would like to share your must-have items, or have any other thoughts then we'd welcome you to comment on this blog post or get in touch with us directly.

Happy playing!
