Last month Fretfunk attended the 2016 NAMM Show at the Anaheim Convention Centre in California. This is one of the biggest music shows in the world, with the most amazing array of instruments, accessories, gear, musicians and much more. Four floors of exhibitors, plus live music and events both indoors and outdoors and the odd sighting of famous players like Mikkey Dee from Motörhead.
For Fretfunk the NAMM Show is a number of things. It’s an opportunity for us to look for ideas and new products, it’s a chance to learn new ways to manage our business, we always meet new contacts and make new friends, and it’s a chance to reflect on our own business and plan for the next year.
As always, guitars and guitar gear are a focus for us. You always get the big players such as Ibanez, Fender and Gibson showing off their guitars, but they aren’t really where the cutting edge of guitar innovation is at. I’m continually amazed to see how people keep reinventing instruments. This guitar shown here actually has an aluminium body and a composite neck. The rigidity of these materials gives amazing sustain and the humbuckers give a thick rock tone, but it's really weird feeling a guitar that isn't made of wood!
Here’s another example of instrument innovation – a six-string electric violin! These instruments are beautiful to look at, but on close inspection the quality of the build is fantastic as well.
We loved the Van Halen drums on the Ludwig stand – they always make beautiful high quality drums but this has to be the most beautiful drum set I’ve ever seen!
Fretfunk 2016 and Beyond
As for the changes we’ll make to Fretfunk after our NAMM visit, we’ll definitely be retaining our values – bringing quality and innovative products into the market, backed by service from people who care – but we will be making extra efforts to bring more products on board this year. 2016 is going to be an exciting year for Fretfunk and we can’t wait to get started on the next chapter of Fretfunk.
